Designing a Musical Matchmaker to Unblock Creative Collaboration
OpenMic
OpenMic is a mobile app that connects musicians for creative collaboration. Using natural language search powered by LLMs, it helps songwriters, producers, engineers, and instrumentalists find their ideal musical match. I was brought on to prepare the product for its v1 launch—reworking the UX and visual design to better reflect the brand, and enhance the quality of collaboration through intentional design.

OpenMic’s beta version demonstrated the foundational experience but needed polish ahead of market launch. It lacked a consistent visual identity stemming from the absence of a unified design system. The onboarding flow resulted in incomplete profiles, impacting matchmaking quality.

Reduced onboarding drop-off and improved profile completeness
I accomplished this through 3 focused strategies: a progress bar, a midpoint moment of encouragement (“You’re doing great!”), and the option to skip after 70% completion. Since the profile powers OpenMic’s matchmaking engine, improving completion directly increased match quality and user satisfaction.

Introduced texture and warmth to the visual design
"You should be able to see the hands that made it" was the guiding principle. I incorporated a skeuomorphic dial (with haptic feedback) for navigating between collaborators, giving the interface a handmade feel that echoed the spirit of creative collaboration.

Designed a lightweight design system
With just one developer (also the co-founder), it was crucial that the system was intuitive, even when not fully documented. I prioritized clarity, repeatability, and clean use of Tamagui, making sure components could be reused or extended easily.
